UAE leaders say no to a forex policy shift – for now

Barely had Kuwait’s abandonment of the dollar peg been announced than Qatar and the UAE came under pressure to declare whether they would follow suit, because they too are wrestling with inflationary pressures. But within days both countries had ruled out any early change.

Beyond the FNC election

This month’s electoral college vote has created a climate which should drive ahead moves towards a wider form of popular participation, even though not all Emiratis are enthused by the prospect – even among the small minority of nationals entitled to vote in elections to fill half the seats on the 40-member Federal National Council.

UAE’s complex electoral manoeuvres make voting experiment a hard call

Of all the Gulf’s recent elections, the indirect federal poll about to be staged in the seven emirates, for an assembly whose future powers remain unclear, is surely the most complex. The leadership in Abu Dhabi is indicating this represents a modest start, with more ambitious electoral politics to follow, but for the foreseeable future it is the emirates’ rulers and their key aides who will continue to call the shots.

Iran and the GCC: when affable local diplomacy is not enough

It is almost a year since Abdulrahman Hamad Al-Attiyah described Iran as a threat to the region’s stability. The Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) secretary-general accused the Islamic Republic of harbouring ambitions to transform south Iraq into an Iranian protectorate and described Tehran’s nuclear plans as a “serious threat to our security”. But was Al-Attiyah really reflecting the views of member governments – and what do they feel today, having had the chance to watch President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s performance on the international stage?.

The accession of Dubai’s new ruler to the federal premiership has produced one of the most important government reshuffles in 35 years. It is a clear declaration of intent, a pointer to the evolution of national development strategy but also a completion of the leadership change effectively inaugurated with the November 2004 death of iconic founding president Sheikh Zayed.
