Yemen: Tensions remain high in Al-Dali

Issue 967 - 04 Apr 2014 | 2 minute read

Fighting in Al-Dali Province, known as the ‘door to the south’, continues between government forces and protesters from the Southern Movement, Al-Hirak. Confrontations began on 27 December after the 33rd Armoured Brigade shelled a school during a funeral for a Hirak activist. The brigade commander, Abdullah Dhaban, initially said that his soldiers were returning fire after their camp came under attack by Hirak militia. UN Security Council Resolution 2140 of 26 February– which also called for sanctions on those disrupting the transition – emphasised the need for both parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, and called for an investigation.
