Al-Nahyan genealogical history points to periods of turbulence as the family has exerted their power over Abu Dhabi and the wider region. The Al-Nahyan come from the Al Bu Falah section of the famous Bani Yas tribe, which was based in the inland oases and acquired its power from the control of fresh water – in contrast to tribes such as the Qawasim (Sharjah and Ras Al-Khaimah) or Al- Na’im, which had enormous seafaring and trading power.
