The Al-Thani come from the Maadhid subsection of the vast Bani Tamim tribe, which has its origins in central Arabia. Other key Qatari clans such as the Al- Mahmoud (the deputy prime minister’s family) and the Al-Attiyah (traditionally considered Qatar’s second family) also come from the Bani Tamim.
