Al-Tamimi’s $560m claim under the Oman-US FTA fails

The American businessman Adel Al-Tamimi, who brought the first, and so far only, claim under the January 2009 Oman-US Free Trade Agreement (US-Oman FTA) over the alleged government expropriation of his limestone quarry investment, has lost his case and been ordered to pay the Omani state’s legal bills of $5.6m.Al-Tamimi, who was born in Ajman, comes from a well-connected Gulf family; his grandfather was a leader of the Al-Tamimi tribe, family members have served as advisers to Emirati sheikhs and his younger brother is the prominent Emirati lawyer Essam Al-Tamimi.
