UN General Assembly: Leaders and senior officials descended on New York in September for the 76th UN General Assembly. Qatar’s Emir Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani and Iraqi President Barham Salih were the only Gulf heads of state to appear in person.

Opec and energy markets

Oil head into $80/bbl territory: After months of not always easy consensus-building, the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its Opec+ allies have continued their control over the market. Having sent crude prices into $70/bbl-plus territory in June, after trading in the $60s/bbl range since February – a major recovery after the 2020 price slump – Brent crude briefly topped $80/bbl on 28 September, before falling marginally back.
