President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan (MBZ)’s visit to the White House on 23 September was the first by a sitting UAE head of state. Against a backdrop of rising violence in Gaza, Lebanon and Sudan, the main breakthroughs were promises of greater co-operation in defence and artificial intelligence.
There are signs the UAE is starting to pay a higher price for its involvement in Sudan’s civil war – a conflict in which Abu Dhabi has been identified as a key supporter of Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti)’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, and where other regional powers have been supporting General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan’s Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). Saudi Arabia’s information and communications minister Abdullah Bin Amer Al-Swaha told the first day of an AI industry conference in Riyadh on 10 September that “there is a lot of overhype” around artificial intelligence (AI). It is hype his government is firmly leaning into though, in an effort to establish a role for the country in the emerging technology ecosystem. Read more
