UAE: Economic stability and an independent streak

The UAE is the GCC's second largest economy and, while oil and gas remain the dominant sources of revenue, diversification is bearing fruit. The country has established itself as a regional power and has at times been interventionist.

It is also increasingly showing a willingness to diverge from some of its Gulf neighbours, not least in relation to regional heavyweight Saudi Arabia (for example in Yemen), and even its western allies (by strengthening its ties with Russia and China).
