Sultan Bin Salman: Profile raised

Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage president Prince Sultan Bin Salman has been elected vice-president of the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Middle East. He was in Colombia in mid-September to head the Saudi delegation to the UNWTO general assembly. A few days later, he visited the Machu Picchu citadel in Peru and had a meeting with Peruvian President Ollanta Humala. There have long been rumours that Prince Sultan would like a more senior position; his name has been mentioned as a possible Riyadh governor.

King Abdullah Bin Abdelaziz had a meeting with Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in Jeddah on 8 July. As the low price of a barrel of oil begins to tip the fiscal balances of countries across the Gulf region, there is a cogent argument that says now would be an excellent time to wind down energy subsidies. Qatar: Production starts on Typhoons

Defence minister Khalid Bin Mohammed Al-Attiyah visited BAE Systems in the UK in October to mark the start of production of the Typhoon fighter jets destined for the Qatari Emiri Air Force (QEAF). This followed official confirmation of the 24 plane order in September, with the first aircraft to be delivered in 2022. Attiyah also held talks with his British counterpart Gavin Williamson. The UK’s Royal Air Force is due to establish a joint squadron of Typhoon jets with the QEAF, to be initially based in the UK.

Fresh from his talks in London and New York, Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani arrived in Los Angeles on 22 September, where he would be spending the next “several days” on a “working visit”, Qatar News Agency reported. Qatari ambassador to the US Mohammed Al-Kuwari said the visit would “further enhance relations between Qatar and California.”Qatar Airways began direct Doha-LA flights in January. Qatar Investment Authority last year announced a $1.34bn investment to buy four office buildings in the upmarket West Los Angeles district of Westwood, in partnership with local real estate investment trust Douglas Emmett.

President François Hollande has confirmed that France is selling Egypt two Mistral-class amphibious assault ships, originally built for Russia but not delivered because of the Ukraine crisis (Paris has repaid a $1.3bn advance). During the European Union’s 22 September refugee crisis summit in Brussels, Hollande told reporters that he and President Abdel Fattah El Sisi had “agreed on the price and conditions”. The deal represents another big win for French defence sales. The ships are expected to be used with the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen.

An Islamic State (IS or Daesh) affiliate claimed responsibility for seven simultaneous attacks, including two suicide bombings, that killed 43 people in Mukalla on 27 June. Mukalla was occupied by its jihadist rival Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula until April, when it left following an agreement with local groups to avoid conflict with forces backed by the UAE, which secured Mukalla’s main streets, port and airport.

Kuwait: Egypt aid

Egypt’s central bank governor, Hisham Ramez, said on 11 September that Kuwait would deposit $2bn in aid in the bank “next week”. Ramez told Al Arabiya television that the money would remain in the central bank for five years. It is part of a $4bn aid package announced by Kuwait following the overthrow of president Mohammed Morsi (GSN 951/1).

Kuwait: National service plans

Kuwait is to introduce national service within weeks, following talks at the Military Defence Council, headed by defence minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, on 20 April. The military service law was approved by the cabinet in May 2015 and is due to come into effect on 10 May. National Service Authority commander Major General Ibrahim Salem Al-Omairi has been tasked with informing the public about what is expected from them. The UAE and Qatar both introduced national service in 2014.
