Qatar: Homeland security deals

The Ministry of the Interior (MoI) signed 11 contracts worth a total of QR260m ($71m) at the biannual Milipol Qatar homeland security exhibition, which ran from 31 October to 2 November in Doha. The event attracted 6,538 visitors from 103 countries, and 230 exhibitors from 35 countries. MoI deals included a QR140m contract with Ares Beskitas of Turkey for unspecified equipment and weapons for boats, and a QR2.5m deal with Austria’s Sail Labs Technology for media monitoring systems.

Iran: F-14 refurbishment, F-7 crash

The Iranian Holy Defense News Agency gave prominence to a ceremony on 22 May that celebrated the return to frontline service of a single grounded Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (Iriaf) F-14 Tomcat. The F-14 entered service in 1974 and was retired by the US in 2006, but Iran has been forced to retain it and other obsolescent US models, including F-4 Phantoms, due to international sanctions.

Israeli chief of staff General Aviv Kohavi has hinted heavily that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) carried out an air strike on 7 August against Houthi ballistic missiles at Al-Hafa, south-east of Sanaa. A strike inside Yemen by Israeli forces, rather than by proxies, would be highly unusual.

The first batch of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft for the Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) arrived at Dukhan Airbase on 27 August, watched by Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, minister of state for defence affairs Khalid Bin Mohammed Al-Attiyah, Qatar Armed Forces chief of staff Lieutenant General Salem Bin Hamad Bin Aqeel Al-Nabit and Qatar Amiri Air Force commander Brigadier General Jassem Mohamed Al-Mannai.
