Yemen: Saudi redeployments continue

There have been further movements of coalition forces following Saudi troop redeployments and withdrawals in Mahra, Shebwa and Aden in October. Saudi and UAE forces have withdrawn from the port area of Hodeidah, in effect ceding the city to the Houthis. A coalition spokesman described this as part of tactical redeployments, with the troops needed elsewhere.

President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s government continues to lose ground against the Houthis in Marib province, where the rebels are close to encircling Marib city. Since taking control of the Al-Awadh tribal area in Al-Baydha province’s Radman district, south of Marib governorate, Houthis have advanced into the Qayfah area and have pushed Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and Islamic State elements further away from their stronghold in Rada, Al-Baydha.

UAE to buy training aircraft from China

The UAE Ministry of Defence announced on 23 February that it intended to buy 12 advanced jet trainer aircraft from China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation (Catic), with an option on an additional 36 of the L15 model.
