Nawaf Al-Ahmed: Kuwait’s new ruler

New Emir Sheikh Nawaf  Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was born on 25 June 1937 to then Emir Ahmed, who ruled from 1921 to 1950. He has been identified as a staunch supporter of the late Emir Sheikh Sabah.

Nawaf was locally educated and has held a succession of senior jobs. He was governor of Hawalli governorate (1962-78) and was then appointed to the cabinet, serving as interior minister (1978-88) and defence minister – a job he held as Iraq invaded in August 1990.
