Al Jazeera Media Network on 20 January registered a complaint against Egypt at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), claiming damages and accusing the Egyptian government of harassing its journalists and damaging offices and equipment. Under a 1999 bilateral investment treaty, investors should be afforded fair and equitable treatment by the Egyptian and Qatari governments. London-based law firm Carter-Ruck is acting for Al Jazeera. Carter-Ruck consultant Saad Djebbar was quoted by Al Jazeera in late January as saying the network had chosen an arbitration process because of the politicised nature of Egypt’s judiciary.
