Bahrain: Ali Salman re-elected

Issue 967 - 04 Apr 2014 | 1 minute read

Al-Wefaq, the main opposition group, said Sheikh Ali Salman had won the post of secretary-general for another four years, with Sheikh Hussain Al-Dahi taking the position of deputy secretary-general. Nobody else put themselves forward for the posts, Al-Wefaq said in a statement on 23 March. In late December, Salman was charged with inciting denigration of another social sect and spreading lies that could jeopardise national security. The charges followed a sermon he delivered at Al-Imam Al-Sadiq mosque; he was released, but barred from travelling pending investigation.
