Washington has decided to lift restrictions on security assistance to the Bahraini defence ministry that it put in place following the security crackdown in 2011. In a statement on 29 June, State Department spokesman John Kirby said the US would continue to “press” Bahrain on human rights concerns, but that the constraints on assistance to the Bahrain Defence Force and the National Guard would be removed; restrictions on assistance to the interior ministry – which, Kirby later told reporters, has “a lot more work to do… in terms of human rights issues” – remain in place.
