The British artist Damien Hirst is of course no stranger to controversy. His formaldehyde tiger shark, bejewelled skull, giant ashtray of cigarette butts and fly-covered cow’s head, among other works, have put Hirst – reputed to be the richest living artist – at the forefront of the discussion about modern art; his celebrity status, eccentricity and, frequently, the fact that others create his works, have fuelled the debate about what art is, and what it should be.
