It feels like crunch time for Qatar’s controversial 2022 World Cup. On 9 September, Fifa president Sepp Blatter told insideworldfootball.com that it “may well be that we made a mistake” in awarding Doha the tournament; pressure from European football clubs, TV networks who have paid for broadcasting rights, anti-corruption investigators and Qatar’s rival bidders for the tournament – as Britain’s Daily Mail recently put it, “a four-pronged attack on [Qatar’s] right” – has forced Doha to come out fighting.
