Iran’s complex history with the Taliban enters a potentially co-operative phase

No Gulf country is as directly exposed to events in Afghanistan as Iran and the return of Taliban rule creates challenges on many fronts for Tehran. The two countries share a 920km border, which has been crossed by millions of Afghan refugees – some of them recruited into the Fatemiyoun brigade which has fought under Iranian command in the Syrian civil war.
