Martyrs from the northern emirates
Issue 1001
- 07 Oct 2015
| 1 minute read
Names from the northern emirates, like Al-Shehhi and Al-Baloushi, appear repeatedly on casualty lists, with nine men from the former tribe and seven from the latter reported killed in action to date. The Al-Shehhi family, from which the first UAE soldiers to be killed in recent conflicts came (see main article), are from the Shihuh tribe, whose history was marked by a fierce independence. Inhabiting tough environments in mountainous areas of the Musandam Peninsula and Ras Al-Khaimah (RAK), the Shihuh traditionally lacked influence at RAK emirate or federal level, as they refused to ally themselves with, or accept the dominance of, the ruling Al-Qasimis.
