Issue 993 - 22 May 2015 | 1 minute read

Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al-Thani was elected president of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) on 7 May, taking over from his elder brother, Emir Sheikh Tamim. Known for his involvement in horse racing, Joaan becomes the sixth president of QOC, and will serve a term that runs until the end of the 2016 Olympic Games. All previous presidents have been members of the ruling Al-Thani. The new secretary-general is Thani Abdulrahman Al-Kuwari, who was involved in preparations for the World Handball Championships hosted by Qatar in early 2015.
