Deputy Crown Prince and defence minister Prince Mohammed Bin Salman (MBS) met defence giant Lockheed Martin’s chief executive Marillyn Hewson in late January. They discussed the localisation of the kingdom’s military industry, “in accordance with the 2030 Vision”, according to Saudi Press Agency. Saudi Company for Technological Development and Investment (Taqnia, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund) has been mandated to build a local military industry in partnership with foreign companies. In 2016, Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky signed an agreement with Taqnia to look at the possibility of producing helicopters locally.
