Open letters issued by a grandson of Saudi Arabia’s founding monarch encouraging senior members of the Al-Saud to depose King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Nayef (MBN) and Deputy Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman (MBS) – who, the anonymous writer argues should be replaced with other sons of King Abdelaziz – reveal some of the long-running tensions and divisions within the family. Written in early September, and widely distributed on the internet, they make damaging allegations not only about Salman’s ability to rule but also about alleged abuses of power and mismanagement on the part of MBS and, to a lesser extent, MBN.
