Hossein Salami steadily rose through the ranks of the IRGC, holding a position at virtually every level until his appointment as commander-in-chief in 2019. Known for his firebrand rhetoric against the United States and its allies, he is focused on increasing Iran’s missile capabilities and advocates for greater IRGC involvement in politics during a period when hard-liners have taken a much greater public role.

Iran Revolutionary Guards appoint new intelligence chief

The head of intelligence of Iran’s IRGC Hossein Taeb has been replaced after 13 years in post, with counter-intelligence chief Brigadier General Mohammad Kazzemi taking over. The change comes after a series of mysterious deaths of IRGC personnel and a recent drone attack on a military site near Tehran.
