Ghalibaf held a series of miliary and security roles during the first 35 years of his career, but in more recent years has shifted into the political arena, being a prominent mayor of Tehran for 12 years and now in the influential position of parliamentary speaker. However, he has had setbacks, including three failed runs for the presidency.
