A career diplomat, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian enjoyed the support of hardline politicians and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) leadership. With expertise in international relations and Arab politics, Amir-Abdollahian used his position to focus on regional ties and combatting western intervention in the region.

He died alongside President Ebrahim Raisi and others when the helicopter they were travelling in crashed in poor weather in East Azerbaijan province on 19 May 2024.
